The new Channel Water-Recreation Area adjacent to the main channel at the Port of Hualien is the latest attraction for the public to visit and enjoy at Taiwan’s international commercial ports. Developed by the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) under the National Development Plan for Taiwan International Commercial Ports (2012-2016), the area may be easily reached from downtown Hualien City by car via Gangkou Road or on foot over the scenic footbridge at the end of Zhongxing Road. Moreover, the Channel Water-Recreation Area is now a must-see stop on Hualien City’s popular Two Lakes Bikeway.
The 650m-long,inner channel dates back to the Port of Hualien’s earliest days as a commercial port. While developing the new water recreation zone in and around Wharves 1~4, the TIPC invested a further NT$15 million to refurbish and beautify the adjacent inner-harbor channel area(land area is about 7,740 m2). This work, which concluded in April 2016, included repairs and improvements to channel barrier walls, the repair and resurfacing of channel banks, and the installation of new landscaping grass, walkways, protective railings, and public lighting. Furthermore, the carved-stone chairs that have been installed throughout the area beautifully reflect Hualien’s natural setting between the mountains and sea. The Channel Water-Recreation Area, developed to reflect a relaxed South Pacific ambiance, is the Port of Hualien’s brightest new outdoor leisure and shopping destination.
The Port of Hualien has completed refurbishment work on Warehouses 1~4 and is in the process of recruiting interested retailers and providers of services such as whale-watching tours, bicycle tours / rentals, guided area tours, food & beverage, and retail goods. These and other developments promise to make the Channel Water-Recreation Area an increasingly diverse and attractive destination for East Coast visitors and residents alike.
