Demonstrating its commitment to green-port and sustainable-development goals, the Port of Hualien on October 18th submitted the necessary paperwork to Lloyd’s Register to conduct a renewal assessment for Ecoport certification. The subsequent inspection by Lloyd’s Register confirmed that the port is continuing to meet Ecoport certification qualifications, underscoring the strong and steady environmental-protection performance achieved by the Port of Hualien.

In an official statement, the Port of Hualien remarked that, as a good corporate citizen, it is continuing to actively improve environmental quality within the port area and that it had on November 15th, 2016 passed all requirements for Ecoport certification. As the terms of certification require a biannual assessment to maintain Ecoport certification status, the Port of Hualien submitted a reassessment application on October 18th of this year (2018). The European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO) assigned reassessment responsibilities to Lloyd’s Register. The purpose of this Ecoport reassessment was to confirm that the Port of Hualien has maintained, and continued to improve, its environmental quality.

The renewal assessment committee was attended by various departments under the Port of Hualien as well as by representatives of the Maritime Port Bureau’s East Maritime Affairs Center and Hualien County Environmental Protection Bureau, underscoring that Hualien’s Ecoport certification was and remains a multi-agency effort. The solidarity demonstrated in the meeting was recognized and appreciated by the visiting Lloyd’s Register inspectors.

In addition to air quality improvement measures such as the expanded utilization of harbor-side power generation facilities and mandatory reductions in vessel entry and departure speeds, the Port of Hualien has achieved strong improvements in overall environmental quality through its Water Resource Bank 3.0 program and promotion of environmental classrooms. Water Resource Bank 3.0 is effectively promoting the recovery of surface water for use in regular dust suppression, vessel cleaning, and other activities, reducing / eliminating the need for public utility water. Apart from giving new purpose to underutilized indoor spaces at the port and amplifying the public reach of positive / successful environmental improvement projects, the environmental classroom program regularly taps the port’s ecological resources to hold summer camps for junior high school students. It is hoped that the program may one day earn environmental classroom certification in order to serve the environmental education needs of other government agencies and schools.

Looking ahead, the Port of Hualien is committed to continuing to reduce / ameliorate pollution emissions as part of a multifaceted effort to improve the port’s environmental quality, fulfill social responsibilities, and attain critical sustainable-development objectives.
