In its recent work to develop new opportunities for water recreation, the Port of Hualien, TIPC has completed various projects within the port’s water-recreation district, including entrance facilities, parking areas, pathways, public washrooms, and landscaping & lighting. Furthermore, the port has successfully concluded efforts to attract private investment to renovate several former warehouses as cultural-creative spaces that promise to further spur tourism development in metropolitan Hualien City.

A landmark, red-painted steel arched bridge has long connected the Port of Hualien Water Recreation District to Hualien City. However, years of exposure to the elements have faded the bridge’s once iconic character. Safety and image considerations led the Port of Hualien to allocate NT$24 million in funds in 2017 to repair and restore this city landmark. Aside from bringing structural integrity back up to code and installing new safety features, sea-related totems are being painted in vivid colors along the structure and base of the bridge. To carry the scenic sea theme into the night, the bridge structure is also being fitted with multicolor LED lights. Additionally, the original steel-plate walkway is being replaced with faux-wood planking to improve the walking surface. Furthermore, the open space between the bridge and the renovated warehouses will soon be traversed by a lighted pedestrian pathway that improves access to the area’s installation art pieces and, when completed, will be the final touch in the port’s latest effort to enhance its recreation & leisure infrastructure.

Work on the Port of Hualien Scenic Bridge Reconstruction Project commenced on July 25th of this year and is expected to be completed by the end of December at a budget of NT$21.5 million.

The two international marathon events that are currently scheduled in Hualien later in 2017 both include the Hualien Scenic Bridge on their itineraries. The expansive views of the blue Pacific and the port from this bridge will certainly be etched into the memories of marathon participants and underscore its value in promoting port recreation. The bridge certainly has a pivotal role to play in the development of Port of Hualien recreation and the upgrading of related infrastructures and ambiance.
